- The NTLP office receives the online application and the program fee electronically, and the required admission documents by mail from the applicant. Applications are reviewed for admission requirements and approved by the NTLP office. This process can take 7-10 business days. Those admitted to the program receive a Letter of Acceptance announcing the date and time of the mandatory orientation meeting.
- If the application is denied the applicant receives a Letter of Deficiency indicating why the application was not accepted. NTLP will hold the application packet and program fee until the deficiencies are removed before June 15, 2008. If the applicant is unable to remove the deficiencies by the June 15, 2008 deadline, then the application must be withdrawn. See the NTL Program Fee Refund Policy for details.
- Participants must attend the mandatory orientation meeting held in June 2008 to receive their NTLP site assignment where they will attend all summer and monthly Instructional Modules.
- NTLP instructional sites are in various locations generally in the NW, NE, SW, SE and Central regions of the state. Every effort is made to assign participant to a site closest to the address given at the time of application. Information will be distributed and questions answered at orientation.
Participants also receive an Employment Eligibility Form as verification to a school district that the participant is eligible for hire pending completion of all NTLP requirements. This form should be used during the job search process. Participants should make copies of this form to submit with application packets when applying for teaching positions. The original document should be kept to submit to the actual hiring district upon acceptance of employment. NTLP requires that teachers be hired in a full-time, teacher of record position which requires an Arkansas teaching license.
Teacher of record means an NTLP teacher must:
- Be on a full-time contract with the school district
- In a position requiring a teaching license
- Teaching a minimum of five (5) class periods per day (or the equivalent)
- Teaching in the appropriate licensure area (based on assessments).
NTLP teachers can be employed by:
- Any public school district
- Charter schools
- An accredited, private school (provided the school can assign a Pathwise-certified mentor)
- An Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) school, only if the NTL teacher is teaching in the licensure area and level indicated on the Employment Eligibility Form. For example, acceptable employment is if the NTL teacher is hired in an ALE setting to teach English grades 7-12 and is only teaching English to children grades 7-12.
NTLP teachers can NOT be employed in:
- A distance learning setting (where a teacher is not actively engaged with students)
- A position teaching over the Internet (cyberschools)
- A position in the Juvenile Detention facilities or Department of Human Services (DHS) facilities
- An ABC Early Childhood program (since this program requires that teachers hold an Initial or Standard license)
For any other circumstance the NTL
teacher must contact the NTL office and speak with a
Program Advisor to verify that the employment situation
is acceptable.
